World’s First “Semi-Submerged Art Gallery” in the Maldives Made With Jesmonite

Jason deCaires Taylor, the artist who specialises in underwater installations, has just unveiled his latest piece: the Sculpture Coralarium in the centre of the largest coral lagoon in the Maldives island of Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi. The work is a semi-submerged “tidal gallery”, in which visitors can snorkel along a 100m-long line of underwater poplar trees and planted coral to an underwater staircase that leads up to a 6m-tall box made from stainless steel. Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2018 Artists Itamar Freed (UK/Israel) & Anne Levitch (NSW) are both working with Jesmonite supplied by Jesmonite Australasia. Itamar Freed’s sculpture for Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2018 ‘Whispering to Venus (self-portrait as Venus)’ is a collaboration between the artist and an algorithm. The work will be constructed utilising a mobile 3D scanner to capture himself posing as Venus, after Botticelli’s iconic painting ‘The Birth of Venus’.  The sculpture will be created through a computer controlled machine in Jesmonite and resin to more closely resemble classic Greek sculptures.
